WSoP Main Event: Day 3

First off, a big shout-out to Christopher Hamlynn, aka "Trocar Slush Weasel" from the DVDVR message boards. He qualified for the main event online some months ago, and managed to make the money, busting out yesterday in 295th place when his flopped set of 9's was defeated by a flopped set of 10's (Flop came down T-9-3.) He managed to pick himself up $24,365 for his efforts.

Anyway, back to those who are still left. . .and at the start of play today, there was a VERY familiar face at the top of the leaderboard. Last year's champion, Greg "Fossilman" Raymer, currently sits on top of the heap with 185 players remaining going into today's action. Raymer is currently only one of two players that are currently over the $1 million chip mark ($1,064,000). The other is the man who was the chip leader after Day 2, Rodney Pardey, Jr ($1,041,000).

Some other notable pros who are still on the board going into Day 4:

7) Phil Ivey - $722,500
31) Howard Lederer - $496,500
39) Mike Matusow - $454,000
59) John Juanda - $354,000
123) Lee Watkinson - $181,000
165) Dutch Boyd - $92,000
179) Paul Darden - $60,000

Last year, Fossilman outlasted the then-biggest field in WSoP history to take home the then-biggest first prize in WSoP history. This year, the field is twice as large as last year's, and the first-prize purse is 150% (roughly) of what his take last year ended up being. You have to wonder. . .if Raymer does somehow manage to outlast the field again this year and defeat the two biggest fields in the history of the WSoP Main Event, where would that put him among the all-time great poker players? There aren't a lot of people who have won the big one twice. . .Stu Ungar (the only man to win it 3 times), Doyle Brunson, Johnny Chan, and Johnny Moss. . .THAT'S IT! THAT'S THE LIST! And none of those 4 men ever had to defeat a field as large as the ones Raymer will have overcome should he triumph again this year.

Play has already started for today in Vegas.
