WSoP Main Event: Day 1

WARNING: If you're wanting to wait until the WSoP Main Event is shown on ESPN before finding out anything about it, stop reading now. . .and don't bitch to me if you keep going.

Well, damn it, since football season doesn't start for another month or two, I should probably contribute something in the meantime.

For those of you who may or may not remember me, my name is Chris Gates, and I was OMG.com's resident "football guy" for the short time it graced the internet landscape. If what we did could have been classified as "gracing." That's probably really stretching things.

Anyway, today (or yesterday, depending on when you read this) is the day where roughly half of the human race has converged on Las Vegas to begin the biggest event in the poker world. . .the 2005 World Series of Poker Main Event. Last year, Greg "Fossilman" Raymer turned a $100 satellite entry into a $5 million payday as the Main Event winner, defeating over 2500 other competitors.

This year? 6600 participants. At a buy-in of $10,000 each. First prize is estimated to be in the double-digit millions of dollars.

Ummmmm. . .fuck?

Because of the sheer number of competitors in this year's main event, there are three separate "Day 1's" to narrow the field down. Here are some of the more notable names that have already been eliminated:

"Eskimo" Clark, who I've seen on a couple WPT shows.
"Unabomber" Phil Laak, and his girlfriend Jennifer Tilly
Isabella Mercier, who was said to be under the weather. (Conversely, Layne Flack is playing with a pretty nasty fever, and apparently doing quite well for himself.)
Barry Greenstein (somewhere, Jet rejoices)
Brad Garrett (from "Everybody Loves (Loved?) Raymond")
Victor Gulden (at 91 years old, he was the oldest participant in the tournament)

Some of the more notable names playing on the first "Day 1" are the aforementioned Greg Raymer, Lee Watkinson (the current chip leader, up over 100K in chips), Paul Darden, Scott Fischman, Chris "Jeebus" Ferguson, Josh Arieh, Clonie Gowen, Scotty Levy (WHAT ABOUT ME!? WHAT ABOUT MY FLUSH DRAW!?), Ted Forrest, Shannon Elizabeth (yes, THAT Shannon Elizabeth), Mike Sexton, Eric Seidel, Mike Caro, Humberto Brenes, "Devilfish" Ulliot, Gus Hansen, Toto Leonidas, and Johnny Chan.

There's a contribution. Hopefully I can do something similar to this every day until the Main Event finishes. How hard is it to read PokerWire or one of the 85 million poker blogs out there on the net and regurgitate what they're saying? (-:
